The Principal, Michael J. Podraza, of East Greenwich High School formally announced today the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists and Commended Students.

Semifinalists in the 2018 National MeritⓇ Scholarship Program

Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalist in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit ScholarshipⓇ award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalist are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit ScholarⓇ title.

East Greenwich High School’s Semifinalists are Cole Campbell, Jason DiMase, Alicia Gibbons, Laura Murphy, Grace Scott and Matthew Sommer. To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalists’ academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SATⓇ scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists about 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation.  All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists.  Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin or religious preference.

Commended Students in the 2018 National MeritⓇ Scholarship Program

About 34,000 Commended Students are being recognized throughout the nation for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, these Commended Students can take great pride knowing that they placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQTⓇ).

East Greenwich High School’s Commended Students are Siddhi M. Deshpande, Sean Hanley, Peter Iwamoto, Axel Lindquist, Matthew Plympton, Priya Sarma, Nathaniel Wolfgang, Jeffrey Yu and Lucy Yu have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.  A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

This week’s “Food for Thought” is a post from Will Richardson-The Absolute Best We Can Do For Kids. “The news that Maryland’s biggest school district gave up on its attempt to change the grading scale for its 150K kids shouldn’t shock anyone. But reading between the lines of the Washington Post story that chronicled its retreat back to an A-F format offers up a relevant postmortem on why many changes we try to implement in schools in general end in failure.”
We hope you have a great week and we look forward to seeing you at Open House.

Google Classroom Notifications/Email Summaries

As you are likely aware, East Greenwich Public Schools is a Google Apps for Education School District.  As part of the high school’s movement to a 1:1 digital learning environment, a number of EGHS teachers have gravitated towards using various learning management systems such as Blackboard, Canvas and Google Classroom with the objective of enhancing collaboration and communication with students and streamlining workflow.
Last year, Google Classroom gave teachers the option of giving parents and guardians the ability to receive a daily or weekly “summary” of work that has been assigned or, according to Google, is missing.
As a school, we have identified a number of inconsistencies that can create misleading information distributed through these summaries. For instance, students can press a button to mark work as “completed” without submitting a work product. Also, assignments tagged as “missing” may still be in progress, be a group project that does not require an individual submission or perhaps a task that was completed on paper or through another platform.
The use of the parent notification feature of Google Classroom at EGHS, just like the use of Google Classroom itself, is at the teacher’s discretion. However, please know that those teachers who do not use the feature generally don’t use it in order to avoid sending information that may be inaccurate or confusing rather than helpful to you.
Checking Aspen and communicating with teachers through e-mail remains the best method to check on your student’s progress as needed.

EGHS “Stats” Book Published in ASPEN

Through the tireless efforts of the guidance secretaries in keeping our college data up to date we are pleased to provide you with an online copy of the STATS BOOK that is incredibly useful to our students applying to colleges. This book shows past student acceptances, waitlists, and rejections by GPA and test scores from the last four years. When viewing this book remember that this is how EG students fare in comparison to their peers and these stats are sometimes different than what you might find posted online on a college website or in another type of college directory.
For clearer understanding the GPA is a weighted GPA, ED =Early Decision, RD = Regular Decision, RO = Rolling. Every once in awhile a student is accepted when it appears that those with similar academic profiles are rejected. We never know exactly why that is but it can be that the student was an athlete, had a unique talent or was an oboe player when the colleges last oboe player graduated. There can always be anomalies and sometimes we do not know the reasons behind them. In addition, these scores/numbers are only one part of the college admission process. The transcript, the rigor of the courses, the essay, student activities and letters of recommendation all play a part in the process. However, this book has been a tremendous guide for all counselors and students to use in the application planning process and we hope that you will find it useful in the college planning process. A hard copy of this book is available in the guidance office. Please click here to view the EGHS STATS BOOK for SY 17-18. This link will also be made available through an announcement in the parent portal of ASPEN.
