With Wonderful Fall Weather- Student Usage of Court Yards and Carrie Mac Gardens

One of the hidden benefits of the recent terrific weather has been the increased availibility of the courtyard to students.

Thanks to Mrs. Mong in the Guidance office for snapping these pictures, as well as being a driving force behind the creation and expansion of the Carrie Mac gardens and seating area for members of EGHS.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

This week’s “Food for Thought” is from The New York Time Magazine, which asks the very important question- Why Are More American Teenagers Than Ever Suffering From Severe Anxiety?
“For many of these young people, the biggest single stressor is that they “never get to the point where they can say, ‘I’ve done enough, and now I can stop,’ ” Luthar says. “There’s always one more activity, one more A.P. class, one more thing to do in order to get into a top college. Kids have a sense that they’re not measuring up. The pressure is relentless and getting worse.”
Thank you for all of your support of East Greenwich High School, our students, and our mission to EMPOWER all members of our school’s community. Have a great week.

EGHS Boys Soccer Team Gives Back to Community

This just in...

The EGHS Boy's soccer team gave their time, effort and energy to 24 families in EG this past Saturday. The original goal was to raise $500 for the American Cancer Society in memory of Neil Fachon. Players raked, split wood, shoveled gravel, painted a tree house stacked boxes and stained an entire deck. Additionally, players also took time to clean the entire perimeter of the parking lot and field at the high school. When the day was over the team was able to far exceed their $500 goal and earned $2150 in donations!!!

We are honored that this money will be donated to the American Cancer Society by the EGHS boys soccer team on behalf of Neil Fachon. We are also very proud of these young men who are the latest example of Avenger excellence at EGHS. Well done!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

EGHS to Participate in Gallup Student Poll

Between 10/23-10/27 our school will participate in the Gallup Student Poll.

Gallup launched the Gallup Student Poll in 2009. Gallup provides analytics and advice to organizations around the world. The Gallup Student Poll is a brief, 24-item survey available on the web for students in grades 5 through 12. One time per year in the fall, the survey is provided at no cost to schools. The Gallup Student Poll includes the following themes:
  • Engagement- is the student’s involvement in and enthusiasm for school.
  • Hope- is the ideas and energy students have for the future.
  • Entrepreneurial Aspiration- is the talent and energy for building businesses that survive, thrive and employ others.
  • Career/Financial Literacy- is the information, attitudes and behaviors that students need to practice for healthy participation in the economy.

The Gallup Student Poll gives students a voice in building great schools, and results provide schools with important, actionable information beyond standard measures, such as grades and test scores, to help schools make kids ready for the future. Please visit the Gallup Student Poll homepage on the web at http://www.gallupstudentpoll.com to view the survey items and learn more. To date, there have been over 4 million completes of the Gallup Student Poll.

This survey is anonymous and voluntary. That means Gallup cannot identify your student, and your student’s individual responses will not be shared with anyone. Only grade-level and school-level information will be shared with our school. Your student does not have to participate in this survey. There are no consequences or penalties if your student does not participate. Email Gallup Education at educationhelp@gallup.com if you have questions about this survey,  or contact your school principal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please sign and return this form if you do NOT agree to have your student participate in the Gallup Student Poll. You only need to return this form to school if you do NOT give permission for your student to participate.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

This week’s “Food for Thought” is a post from Nick Carr entitled “What they have wrought”. In it he examines some of the psychologically “addictive” aspects of social media that may easily pass under the radar. For example-
“Most illuminating is the story of the downward-swipe gesture used to refresh a feed. It was invented by Loren Brichter for his Tweetie service in 2009 and was adopted by Twitter when the company acquired Tweetie a year later. The “pull-to-refresh” feature has now become ubiquitous. But that raises a question: why does the gesture continue to be used now that it’s easy for social media companies to refresh their feeds automatically? The answer is that the tactile gesture is more seductive.”
We hope you had a good long weekend and that you have an even better week.
