FOOD FOR THOUGHT
This week’s “Food for Thought” is an article from The Atlantic “What If High School Were More Like Kindergarten?” I selected this as the post for the week, not only because of the reflective nature of the author, but also because of the references made to the results of last year’s Gallup Student Poll.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • Rhode Island Department of Education Issues School Classifications- East Greenwich High School

Earlier this week the Rhode Island Department of Education released school classifications for all public schools (for State-wide classifications, please click here). In the metrics and calculations used to create these classifications, East Greenwich High School did extremely well- receiving 97 out of a possible 100 points.

To put our “points” in perspective, the only two high schools in Rhode Island to receive “Commended” classifications, Barrington and North Smithfield, had 93 and 90 points respectively. However, in spite of our score, we did not receive a “Commended” classification. The reason we were not a commended school was due to our participation rate in State testing (PARCC). Our participation rate was- 89.6% for ELA/Reading and 89.9% for Mathematics. While this was an improvement from participation rates in SY 14-15 (ELA/Reading 83% and Mathematics 81%), this was still below the federally required participation benchmark of 95%. As such, East Greenwich High School was disqualified from receiving a “Commended” designation this year. An EGHS’ participation rate below the required level is a recent phenomena that coincides with the introduction of PARCC as the State’s assessment tool and our participation rate was impacted last year by family’s decisions to “opt out” of state testing for various reasons.

Looking forward to State testing in Spring 2017, the metrics and populations used to create school and district classifications will once again be changing. This year, due to changes instituted by the Commissioner at the beginning of this year, only members of the Class of 2020 AND other individual members who have not yet taken taken a Mathematics PARCC assessment while in high school to date will be tested and used for school and district accountability purposes.

While we salute the Commissioner for implementing a reduction in the amount of testing, we must also acknowledge the inherent flaws of classifying and holding accountable an entire 9-12 school based on one cohort of students who have received less than one year of instruction in the school being classified, and a small cohort of students that for whatever reason, have not yet taken a subject area test in PARCC Mathematics.

In spite of our lack of “Commended” status due to participation rates and what we believe are flaws in next year’s accountability metrics, East Greenwich High School takes any accountability metric and outcome very seriously. We will continue to focus on improving all areas that are within our locus of control to positively impact all students’ learning and the achievement of East Greenwich High School’s mission. It is in this vein that I would like to use this opportunity to encourage all parents, guardians and students in the EGHS community to also seize what is within your control as well. In this case, I would ask that you please consider the implications that any future decision to “opt out” may have on the accountability status and the overall reputation of East Greenwich High School.

In closing, I thank you for your consideration of this request and for all of the support that you continue to give to our students, our educators, our school, and our mission.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
This week’s “Food for Thought” is an invitation to “time travel” to 2100 to look back on Stanford University’s 2025 revisioning of what school and the undergraduate experience needs to be. A description from the site gives an general overview of what you will find by exploring the website:
“The project culminated with an experiential exhibit entitled “Stanford 2025,” held at the d.school in May 2014. To encourage an exploratory mindset, the event was staged as a time-travel journey. The community embarked to the distant future—and landed just at the moment when Stanford was looking back retrospectively at major paradigm shifts that “happened” around 2025. These possible shifts were shared as provocations—a subjective, student-centered imagining of what could happen as the future unfolds.
Here, on this website, we invite you to travel with us and explore these possible futures. Then, we hope you will use the provocations—and the tools available on the site—to spark your own vision for the future of higher education by trying some experiments.
Now, strap in, and let’s go to the year 2100…
While the entire Stanford2025 site is worth looking through, I believe the section “Purpose Learning” is a fantastic example of how education could be truly personalized, leading to the empowerment of each learner. Hope you enjoy this trip “back in time” and this vision of the future.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • East Greenwich Public Schools to Participate in Gallup Student Poll

Gallup launched the Gallup Student Poll in 2009. Gallup provides analytics and advice to organizations around the world. The Gallup Student Poll is a brief, 24-item survey available on the web for students in grades 5 through 12. One time per year in the fall, the survey is provided at no cost to schools. The Gallup Student Poll includes the following themes:
  • Engagement- is the student’s involvement in and enthusiasm for school.
  • Hope- is the ideas and energy students have for the future.
  • Entrepreneurial Aspiration- is the talent and energy for building businesses that survive, thrive and employ others.
  • Career/Financial Literacy- is the information, attitudes and behaviors that students need to practice for healthy participation in the economy.

The Gallup Student Poll gives students a voice in building great schools, and results provide schools with important, actionable information beyond standard measures, such as grades and test scores, to help schools make kids ready for the future. Please visit the Gallup Student Poll homepage on the web at http://www.gallupstudentpoll.com to view the survey items and learn more. To date, there have been over 4 million completes of the Gallup Student Poll.

This survey is anonymous and voluntary. That means Gallup cannot identify your student, and your student’s individual responses will not be shared with anyone. Only grade-level and school-level information will be shared with our school. Your student does not have to participate in this survey. There are no consequences or penalties if your student does not participate. Email Gallup Education at educationhelp@gallup.com if you have questions about this survey,  or contact me at mpodraza@egsd.net or 401-398-1300.

If you do not want your child to participate in the Gallup Student Poll, please click here and return the bottom of the form to the EGHS main office of by Friday, October 14th.
  • Working out  a few issues with Google Classroom (From EGHS Assistant Principal Mr. Chace)

As you are likely aware, East Greenwich Public Schools is a Google Apps for Education School District.  As part of the high school’s movement to a 1:1 digital learning environment, a number of EGHS teachers have gravitated towards using various learning management systems such as Blackboard, Canvas and Google Classroom with the objective of enhancing collaboration and communication with students and streamlining workflow.

In an August update, Google Classroom gave teachers the option of giving parents and guardians the ability to receive a daily or weekly “summary” of work that has been assigned or, according to Google, is missing.

As a school, we have identified a number of inconsistencies that can create misleading information distributed through these summaries. For instance, students can press a button to mark work as “completed” without submitting a work product. Also, assignments tagged as “missing” may still be in progress, be a group project that does not require an individual submission or perhaps a task that was completed on paper or through another platform.

Until we find solutions to what would now be misleading or incorrect information being forwarded home, you may find that teachers who previously have been listed on your Google Classroom summaries will no longer be there after this week.

In addition, those teachers who are using Google Classroom may not make this feature available to parents to avoid sending information that may be inaccurate or confusing rather than helpful to you.

Checking Aspen and/or communicating with teachers through e-mail remains the best method to check on your student’s progress as needed.

As a school, timely and accurate communication of of student progress is our goal.  We are all working together to provide your sons and daughters with the best education that we can, and to provide you with the most useful information possible as we do so.  Emerging technology will likely provide us with the ability to continuously improve over time, but there will be a learning and implementation curve along the way for the entire school community.

We always strive to communicate effectively with your family, please feel free to let Mr. Podraza or myself know how we can improve while we continue to work on new solutions.

Thank you.

  • EGHS School Profile for 2016-2017
In the link below you will find the East Greenwich High School profile for 2016-17. Significant updates have been made to the profile thanks to the efforts of the EGHS Guidance Department, the vision and graphic design talents of Mrs. Deanna Agresti, and feedback from members of the EGHS community. The information contained in the EGHS profile is the result of hard work by our students who are taught by a tremendous faculty and staff, and who are supported unconditionally by parents, guardians and the community. While school profiles vary from community to community, and from State to State, the EGHS profile attempts to balance and honor all that the EGHS student body has accomplished and what collegiate and university counselors want, need and expect from a school profile. We believe we have struck the proper balance for all. As always, please feel free to contact us with any feedback you may have.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
This week’s “Food for Thought” is an outline of Freshman grading at MIT- Where “In the first semester and the January Independent Activities Period (IAP) freshmen are graded on a Pass or No Record basis in all subjects they take, where P (passing) means C- or better performance.” Because- “Freshman grading is designed to ease the transition from high school by giving students time to adjust to factors like increased workloads and variations in academic preparation. A, B, and C grades are used during the second semester so that freshmen can begin the progression to regular A-F grading in the sophomore year.”
