EGHS Debate Class Hits all the Season's Standards

From Mr. Kenney and his Debate class to Meadowbrook students -

CCS: 4.5:  Students must use multi-media to create projects.
CCS: 7.2: Students will understand that sometimes it is okay to have fun
XMAS: 1.1: Students will spread good will.

Faculty:

Pursuant to CCS standards 4.5 and 7.2 as well as XMAS 1.1, the students in my Debate class had an assignment last night:  Argue FOR one of the aspects of Christmas and the holiday season.

Merry Christmas!

Why we know Santa is Real

Every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings:

The Elf on the Shelf is Real

Why Jack from Nightmare Before Christmas should not be Santa

How the Polar Express is Real

How Santa gets around the World in One Night

Why Christmas Trees are Magical

Need a Notary for School Forms? See Mrs. Mong in Guidance

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/69/Max_Volkhart_Beim_Notar.jpg/220px-Max_Volkhart_Beim_Notar.jpg
From Mrs. Mong in Guidance-

Just a quick note to let you know that I am  notarizing documents for Parent/Guardian of students for sports, testing, health, etc. at the high school.

If a parent ask what they need please tell them that they must bring their ID (in the form of a license, birth certificate, passport) even if I know them and the must sign the document in front of me before I will sign off & place the seal.
I am available 7- 11:30 & 12:30 - 3 PM daily.   This information should be helpful for all Parents/Guardians to know before showing up and expecting a notarized document without proper documentation.

I am glad to be of help to our EGHS community.

Kind regards,
Sherry Mong

EGHS Debate Team Has Strong 1st Showing

The East Greenwich Debate Team had a fantastic day on 11/15 at the first debate tournament of the year held at Cumberland High School.  East Greenwich brought an astounding 36 debaters to the tournament to fill ranks in both the Novice and Varsity divisions. All students commented on the fun of debating other schools in a competitive environment. “I’m very proud of the team we have fielded this year, “ said Mr.Penza. “To go from 10 students to 36 in a year is amazing and the results speak for themselves.” The RIFL Novice Division is defines as comprising of first time debaters. The top 30% of teams and the top 30% of speakers are awarded after three rounds of debating.

East Greenwich Teams were awarded the following:
Novice Teams (out of 66 teams)
1st Ben Markstone & John Hare
11th Angela He & Christian Liu
15th Dan O’Hara & Zach Lepre
18th Elise Warren & Abby Allaire
19th Grace Webb & Jared Maymon
20th Stephan Toljan & Sam Wronski

Novice Individuals (out of 132)
2nd John Hare
3rd Ben Markstone
13th Dan O’Hara
14th Elise Warren
15th Connor VanWinter
16th Angela He
19th Sam Wronski
21st Grace Fitch
38th Grace Webb
40th Christian Liu

Varsity Debate is defined as debater with at least on year of experience. Obviously, placing in this round is much harder. Sometimes teams with only a year experience will debate against seasoned veterans of four years.  Although none of the Varsity teams were recognized, Mr. Penza is very proud of the effort put forth by them and is confident that they will be in contention in the next tournament.

Places of Varsity Teams ( out of 66)
25th Zack Johnson and Yash Dhuri
48th Katie Hollingsworth and Jeremy Bernard – Sasges
55th Molly Bisset & Katie Allen
58th Michaela Natal and Milan Toljan
60th Alec Gannon & Dylan DePriest

The team would also like to thank all the parents who came and judged the debate. The RIFL always needs parent volunteers to act as judges (judges do not judge their own home school) and we had 10 individuals judge at the tournament. Thank you to Mr. Ray Penza, Mrs. Skelton, Dr. Johnson, Mr. Hollingsworth, Mr. Allaire, Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Bisset, and Mrs. Natal.

Students Work With EG Historical Cemetery Commission

From EGHS Parent M.L. Formisano-

http://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/02/00/21/2002115_f7b7225d.jpg
I sit on EG Historical Cemetery Commission and Andy Perrin reached out to us earlier in fall to bring his RI Local history class to local historic cemetery.  He attended a commission meeting in October at which time commission and he were jazzed about potential to explore local history via these sites. This Monday his class will be at a historic cemetery down the street from EGHS, cleaning up and discovering headstone data etc… Then Margot Formisano, as part of her photography curriculum plans to take photos.
Additionally:
·         Senior, James Deakin, who is focusing on restoring a EG Historical Cemetery for his Senior Project attended the commission meeting last night.
·         Additionally, via INTERACT we have students signed up for our Historic Cemetery Clean up.

Impressive interest on faculty and student level in work of this commission and local history.
