As always, competition was intense. But being the championship tournament, only those who qualified during the regular season were eligible to compete. To qualify, debaters had to receive a certificate or trophy during the regular season.

Thirteen EGHS debaters qualified for the tournament, with three qualifying in the varsity division and ten in novice. However, only four (Morgan Walsh, Brianna Knight, Evie Clement, and Saloni Jain) were able to attend. Hustling between the walkways of Roger Williams’ Bristol Campus, they duked it out against some of Rhode Island’s premier schools, such as Barrington, Wheeler, Classical, and Cumberland.

At the end of the day, Morgan Walsh and Brianna were recognized as the 4th Place Novice Team.

Congratulations to all debaters who attended the state tournament, and to all those that were a part of the team this year! A heartfelt thank you also goes out to my father, Mr. Sait, who volunteered as a judge that day, to all of the judges who generously volunteered this season, to the Rhode Island Forensics League for sponsoring the tournaments, and especially to Mr. DeCubellis, who has graciously advised the team all season. All of you truly made this memorable season possible.

by Sunny Sait, Debate Club president

With twenty-one members of the EGHS Debate Club's debate team competing at Mt. Hope High School this past Saturday, the day marked yet another round of triumphs for this once-defunct club.

Forty-five teams in both the novice and varsity divisions ensured the competition was, in a word, fierce. Both public, private, and charter schools participated in the competition, which lasted three rounds of parliamentary-style debate. Many EGHS Debaters, including debaters for whom this was their first tournament, were recognized with certificates and awards:

Evie Clement, 18th Place Individual, Novice Division

Gabriella Giuliano, 11th Place Individual, Novice Division

Saloni Jain and Gabriella Giuliano, 10th Place Team, Novice Division

Morgan Walsh and Brianna Knight, 4th Place Team, Novice Division

Suraj Sait, 6th Place Individual, Varsity Division

Jack Holmgren, 4th Place Individual, Varsity Division

Jack Holmgren and Oscar Clement, 4th Place Team, Varsity Division

The club would not have enjoyed this success without six EGHS parents and relatives volunteering as judges. A hearty “Thank You” goes out to Mr. DiTraglia, father of Ella DiTraglia; Mrs. Ward, mother of Kian Bijari; Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan, the parents of Riley Sullivan; Mr. Sait, the father of Suraj Sait; and Jacob Beaulieu’s charming grandmother.

The team plans to attend its next Rhode Island Forensics League (RIFL) tournament on February 1st at Foxboro Regional Charter School. If YOU are an EG parent interested in volunteering to judge on that Saturday, please contact Mr. DeCubellis (gdecubellis@egsd.net) for more information. Each team is required to bring along at least one parent-judge per four student-debaters, so your consideration is much appreciated. It's a long day, but it's a lot of fun!

Congrats to all debaters! And thank you again, parents and relatives, for your support.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1071894967411573378.post-68131293261163662522019-12-19T09:16:00.003-05:002019-12-19T09:17:19.973-05:00Premiere Episode of FBLA Podcast "Your Missing Semester"

Eight members of the EGHS Debate Club's Debate Team competed at Classical High School in a state-wide tournament which included nine private and public schools and over a hundred students this Saturday, November 16th.
The students applied their argumentation skills in three rounds of parliamentary-style debate, each lasting between 48 to 60 minutes. After the dust settled, three students were recognized with special recognition and awards:
Attendance Update

New automated sign-in procedure is now in place at the Main Office. Ths new process requires students have their Student ID badges. Should a student need a replacement ID please contact Mare Studios at 401-438-1555 or email at info@marestudios.com

Currently EGHS is #1 ranked public high school in RI for attendance so far this year per RIDE data. Parents and Guardians are definitely calling in to excuse absences more frequently this year, which we greatly appreciate. However, old habits don’t disappear overnight so there is still room for improvement this year, so please be sure to call your student in for each day they are absent. Our thanks in advance.

Be on the lookout for attendance related texts and email alerts from Dr. Heath

Feel free to reach out if you have attendance questions or concerns regarding your student’s class/daily attendance

Me….although I am not new to EG. I would like to formally introduce myself as the new department chair for the School Counseling Department. As a 24 year veteran of EGHS, I hope to blend my knowledge of the rich history of the school and community with my vision for our department so that we can best serve our students. One of my goals is increased communication between the School Counseling Department and the EG community so that I can showcase the amazing work all of our counselors are doing with students in grades 6-12. Through this monthly newsletter I will be highlighting that work as it aligns to the ASCA Model for School Counseling as well as providing timely information.

Naviance - After much research, we have decided to purchase Naviance. Girls from East Greenwich High School have discovered their hidden talent for cybersecurity this year with an exciting Governor backed program, Girls Go CyberStart, designed to bridge the cybersecurity skills gap in the US. During the program, girls across the country competed in a series of digital games and challenges to see if they have what it takes to make it in the cybersecurity industry.

Over ten thousand girls across 27 states took part in the first stage of the program, CyberStart Assess. At the end of that round, 6,600 girls performed so highly that they received invitations to take part in the second round, CyberStart Game.

Running until June 28, CyberStart Game pits teams against a series of increasingly difficult cybersecurity challenges to win points for their school.

For the first month of CyberStart Game, girls applied their cyber skills to accumulate points, vying to be one the schools invited to the third and final stage. Last week East Greenwich High School girls found out their score qualified them for The National Championship for Girls Go CyberStart 2019. Here 120 school teams, each comprised of 4 girls, are set to compete in a national online ‘Capture the Flag’ competition, which runs June 5 – June 7.

The top-scoring teams in this final round, both nationally and per state, will win cash prizes for students and their schools. An additional ten high school juniors and /or seniors from Rhode Island with high scoring CyberStart Game scores will also be awarded $500 each in college scholarships.

Alan Paller, Research Director at SANS Institute said:

“Congratulations to all the schools through to the National Championship round of Girls Go CyberStart! It’s fantastic to be able to celebrate and bring to light the hidden-talents of high school girls across the US.

“Alongside Governors, the support from schools and teachers has been instrumental in helping us empower a generation of incredible young women to become the next leaders in an industry where they can make a huge difference. We can’t wait to see what this talented groups of students from East Greenwich High School will go on to achieve.”

Holly Eaves, team mentor and Computer Science teacher said:

“We are so proud of these girls who were are to try something new. Anna Durfey, Kinjal Gupta, Aiza Shaikh and Julia Xu worked so hard to get through to this stage. They have amazing potential and the Girls GO Cyber Start Competition is giving them the opportunity to shine.”

Aiza Shaikh said: “Taking part in Girls Go CyberStart has taught me so many new skills and I’ve really enjoyed the challenges.”
Seen above is the full East Greenwich competition roster. The 36 members with an asterisk (*) next to their name either placed first or second in one or more of their events, qualifying them for the 2019 National Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

In other news from the State Leadership Conference, Jessica Caterson and Jason Page were re-elected State Vice President and State Treasurer, respectively. Next year will be the second year in office for both officers.

A number of FBLA members also competed in the Global Economic Symposium at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston on February 15. In this tri-state competition, student-teams from Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island developed a research-based, viable economic solution to an emerging issue of global and local consequence. The keynote speaker was RI General Treasurer Seth Magaziner, who posed for a picture with the East Greenwich delegation afterward.

Sophomore Jack Gecawich was also honored at the Global Economic Symposium by the Foundation President for the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). Jack earned first place among Rhode Island high-school competitors in their Fall 2018 national essay competition. Finally, on March 6, Jack and three other members of East Greenwich FBLA— Zing Gee, Nick Sanzi, and Suraj Sait—testified at the Rhode Island State House in support of House Bill 5033 designed to ensure all RI high school students have access to a personal finance course. This bill and its sister legislation in the Senate (S0112) would require all public high schools to offer a personal finance course beginning in the 2019-2020 school year and would require graduates to demonstrate proficiency in such a course in the 2021-2022 school year.

Upon returning from winter vacation in early January, the East Greenwich Chapter of FBLA wasted no time getting back to work in preparation for the many business-related events and competitions that would follow in the coming months. Without a doubt, this winter has been a very busy one for the club. On top of preparing for State Leadership Conference scheduled to take place at the end of February, the chapter has participated in a number of other activities in both the FBLA and general business community.

On the financial front, Chief Strategy Officer Jack Gecawich was featured in a Rhode Island PBS segment on financial education that aired on December 28th. Jack also led a group of EGHS FBLA members in conducting a beta test of the STAX application. STAX is an up-and-coming computer game used to teach students about investing through the use of a teen-friendly interface.

On February 1, a handful of members of the chapter also took part in Job Shadow Day, sponsored by the General Treasurer’s Office. On this day, the students traveled to Ascensus, a company specializing in independent retirement and college savings services. One student on the trip, Chase Hirshorn, considered the visit to be “a great opportunity to see what life is really like in the workplace and to learn about the many different roles within a financial services company.”

In other news, former EGHS FBLA Treasurer Kip Hallagan spoke at RI General Treasurer Seth Magaziner’s press conference on January 7. Alongside Magaziner, Hallagan made his case for a required financial literacy course in the RI high school curriculums, stating, “It was eye-opening to see [college students] who could read Moby Dick in a weekend and solve the most complex quadratic equations stumble over predatory loans and other seemingly attractive bait-and-switch offers.”

Furthermore, to get to the 2019 FBLA State Leadership Conference and Business Plan Competition, members of the Sick-end and Climate Cuff business plan teams first had to make it past a shiver of sharks — including attorneys specializing in intellectual property and start-ups, venture capital and mezzanine investors, serial entrepreneurs, M&A analysts, fintech founders, and EGHS FBLA alumni currently enrolled in post-secondary entrepreneurship programs.

Members of the Sick-end team — Celia Adams, Morgan Prior, Meghan Jensen, Samantha Shorr, Lindsay Vican, and Julia Hallworth — took on the mission to create a community of users committed to building awareness of local diseases and decreasing the spread of illnesses through an app. Their next stop is the 2019 Global Economic Symposium on February 15, then onto the AdVenture Capital Innovation Challenge on March 5, followed by the Technovation entrepreneurial/technology competition in May.

Meanwhile, the Climate Cuff team of Jack Holmgren, Robby Ayers, and Cole Batista sought to optimize the temperature of beverages at any moment with their revolutionary technology.

Finally, those participating in the Global Economic Symposium on February 15 also went to Gilbert Stuart Middle School in Providence on Tuesday, January 23. Once there, they collaborated with the students on ideas for the Symposium, which is a showcase for solutions to world problems of local consequence. All in all, it was a very productive winter for the EGHS chapter of FBLA. Looking ahead, the FBLA State Leadership Conference is fast approaching, and EGHS is preparing to make a very strong showing.

The School Counseling Office has been busy! Counselors are meeting with seniors, writing letters of recommendation and have already processed in the neighborhood of 842 applications so far this year. Approximately 550 of these applications fall into the category of Early Decision or Early Action. Typically the total number of applications at this time of year will double by the end of the school year. The guidance secretary Mrs.Mong continues to record all of the applications going out to colleges and the subsequent decisions in our database. Those results create the yearly STATS Book that can be viewed in the School Counseling Office by students or parents as well as online on the Aspen homepage. If you have a senior please remind him/her that all schools to which they apply must be documented in guidance by filling out a yellow cover sheet and turning it into Mrs. Mong. This becomes a way for Mrs. Mong to track and record that valuable information for the STATS Book. A reminder that the STATS book offers just one piece of the puzzle in determining a student’s likelihood of being able to be accepted to a college.

Speaking of the college applications, we offered a Common Application Workshop last month during Advisory. The next workshop will be in December 11th during Advisory. Students should sign up for that in guidance. Students requesting individual help are always accommodated and if a student wishes to meet after school that can be arranged as well.

The School Counseling Office hosted around 85 college and university representatives this year. For the most part representatives have now returned to their respective colleges and universities to begin reading applications. Most of the representatives that visit our school are also "readers" of our student applications. We have the guidance secretary Mrs. McCowan to thank for the orchestration of these college representative appointments.

The School Counseling Office also recently hosted the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Exam (ASVAB) in November and several students signed up to take this exam. Please note that should your son/daughter ever wish to take this in the future EG is able to dictate that no contact or sharing of a child's name with the military is allowed as a result of taking the test. Students do have the option to review their results with a military representative if they so wish. This is just another tool for students to see if they lean towards a certain area of interest that might point them in a specific direction for a career, military or otherwise.

Several weeks ago during Advisory all freshmen heard options that are available to them at two of our regional Career and Technical Centers. Any student wishing to pursue this path should speak to their school counselor. There is an option for students to visit a center for a day prior to applying so interested students should at least take advantage of this opportunity. Transportation is provided for these visits. Daily transportation is also provided if the student enrolls in one of the career centers that are located within a certain distance from EGHS.

A career awareness activity will start next week for sophomores. This will take place during Advisory and it is anticipated that it will conclude for all sophomores the first week of January. As part of this activity students will explore, identify and find information about careers with regards to level of education, salary ranges and outlook for job growth both in RI and nationwide. If you wish to see the website each counselor uses to guide her students through these activities you can view it at: mynextmove.org.

For planning purposes starting in February junior parents will begin receiving invitations to a post high school individual planning meeting with their child’s counselor. Prior to that invitation we will meet with all juniors as a group to outline the process in general and to discuss some post high school options as well as issue their current transcript for review.

In conjunction with the post high school planning with students we host a February parent/student night featuring a college admissions officer that all parent/students are welcome to attend. That presentation takes place in the auditorium. Date and time will be advertised in January.

Did you know that your son or daughter can earn college credit for free outside of the school day? The State of Rhode Island has created several different pathways for this to happen. The website RICourseChoice.org outlines the options now available for students to attend classes outside of the school day. If you have specific questions please contact Mrs. Wilson in the guidance department.

By mid December the school counselors will wrap up the individual freshmen interviews that started earlier this fall. Counselors inquire about the transition to the high school, current courses, outside activities, etc along with asking students to identify an academic and/or personal goal they wish to achieve while in high school. This can be either a long term or short term goal. This 1:1 informal meeting is a good way to establish a relationship with incoming freshmen each year.

Thanks to the Beautify EGHS Committee there is a new bulletin board in the glass case at the top of the steps leading to the second floor hallway. This bulletin board is designed to help students identify their counselor by face/name and suggests ways for a student to get in touch with the counselor and reasons why they might want to access them.

Please visit the School Counseling website at: goo.gl/nUzYnh or by going to the egsd.net website.
There is a lot of valuable information on the site for parents and students.

As always, we are here to support your child throughout his/her high school years!
