EG School Counseling Connection Newsletter Oct. 2019

October 2019 Anne-Marie Flaherty, Dept. Chair

What’s New in the School Counseling Office This Month

  • Me….although I am not new to EG. I would like to formally introduce myself as the new department chair for the School Counseling Department. As a 24 year veteran of EGHS, I hope to blend my knowledge of the rich history of the school and community with my vision for our department so that we can best serve our students. One of my goals is increased communication between the School Counseling Department and the EG community so that I can showcase the amazing work all of our counselors are doing with students in grades 6-12. Through this monthly newsletter I will be highlighting that work as it aligns to the ASCA Model for School Counseling as well as providing timely information.
  • Naviance - After much research, we have decided to purchase Naviance. It is a robust program that will enable us to better maintain college admissions data while also providing us a platform to implement student Individual Learning Plans in both the middle and high schools. We are using this semester to learn the program and will begin our roll out in January with the Class of 2021.

Academic Development

Schedule changes have abated and students should be settled into their classes for this school year.

While we have already been tracking students who are struggling academically, we will be meeting with students with whom we have academic concerns as the first quarter closes in early November.

Career Development

We have been working with seniors individually and through Common Application workshops to assist them with their college applications.

The School Counseling Department has hosted many college admissions representatives with more to follow in the coming weeks. Please check our page on the school website for details.

On November 13 we will be holding an assembly for all juniors to share information about the Prepare RI Internship Program.

Personal Social Development

School counselors have been meeting with their ninth graders as well as students new to the district to make sure students are acclimating to EGHS and to let them know that we can be a resource if they are struggling. These meetings will be wrapping up in the next few weeks.

News from Cole

Now that students have settled in and are acclimated to the schedules and routines at Cole, Mrs. Bradshaw and Mrs. Zannella are making plans to visit classrooms as part of the guidance curriculum. The first group of lessons will focus on healthy relationships, choices regarding social media, digital citizenship, and online safety.

Announcements

Students in AP classes must register and pay for their AP exams by November 1. Forms are available in the school counseling office and from AP teachers.

Food for Thought

Will students who major in STEM careers be more financially secure than their peers who major in liberal arts? This article from the New York Times takes a look at the future earning potential of each group. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/20/business/liberal-arts-stem-salaries.html
