EGHS 2017 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM COMMENDED AND SEMIFINALIST STUDENTS ANNOUNCED

Yesterday, during a Senior class assembly, I was pleased to recognize three “Commended” and two “Semi-Finalist” students selected by the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), about 34,000 Commended Students are being recognized throughout the nation for their exceptional academic promise. The three Commended Students for EGHS are: Luke H. Eller, Connor Mason and Alexander Smith.

Although they will not continue in the 2017 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, these Commended Students can take great pride knowing that they placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Of the approximately 16,000 nationwide Semifinalists, I am pleased to say that two are from East Greenwich High School. The two students announced as Semifinalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program are Erin Culf and Eitan Vilker

These academically talented seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.

On behalf of everyone at East Greenwich High School please join me in congratulating these five students and their families for their achievement and this wonderful recognition.
