I am pleased to share the following poem, written by East Greenwich High School Junior-- Ariel Finkle. We have recently been told that this poem has been selected to appear in the upcoming Wickford Art Association's 2018 Poetry and Art exhibit. Congratulations Ariel!

In My Head
I stare into space
Hoping to find something new out there, floating among the stars.
“Space junk,” they call it, everything from way out there,
But nobody realizes that if it falls to Earth
It can become a m e t e o r.
I don’t need a spacesuit or even a helmet
To go on my trek, people don’t need them on TV. All I need to do is
"go to lightspeed"
And I’m there,
Speeding past the stars
Somewhere inside my head (i can feel myself caving inwards towards my mind, like a camera zoomed in on my brain), hunting for ideas.
I see
All these bits and pieces
Open books with fluttering pages and highlighted phrases
A phone streaming a movie I just saw, paused during THAT scene
Some notes from school about the symbolism of nature
(so that's where they went. i lost them yesterday after class.)
I bring them all together into a cluster
Give them a new coat of paint
Breathe new life into them (because i feel bad, they’ve all been discarded)
Until I’ve made something entirely new.
Now if only it could get out, get noticed, get a b r e a k t h r o u g h --
On the other side. I'm back home now. (reality. boo.)
Out here, these neighbors of the stars are just scribbles in a journal.
But not for long.
