Fall 2018 Update from the School Counseling Office

Update from the School Counseling Office                                                             December 2018

  • The School Counseling Office has been busy!  Counselors are meeting with seniors, writing letters of recommendation and have already processed in the neighborhood of 842  applications so far this year.  Approximately 550 of these applications fall into the category of Early Decision or Early Action.  Typically the total number of applications at this time of year will double by the end of the school year.  The guidance secretary Mrs.Mong continues to record all of the applications going out to colleges and the subsequent decisions in our database. Those results create the yearly STATS Book that can be viewed in the School Counseling Office by students or parents as well as online on the Aspen homepage.  If you have a senior please remind him/her that all schools to which they apply must be documented in guidance by filling out a yellow cover sheet and turning it into Mrs. Mong.  This becomes a way for Mrs. Mong to track and record that valuable information for the STATS Book.  A reminder that the STATS book offers just one piece of the puzzle in determining a student’s likelihood of being able to be accepted to a college.
  • Speaking of the college applications, we offered a Common Application Workshop last month  during Advisory.  The next workshop will be in December 11th  during Advisory.  Students should sign up for that in guidance.  Students requesting individual help are always accommodated and if a student wishes to meet after school that can be arranged as well.
  • The School Counseling Office hosted around 85 college and university representatives this year.  For the most part representatives have now returned to their respective colleges and universities to begin reading applications.  Most of the representatives that visit our school are also "readers" of our student applications. We have the guidance secretary Mrs. McCowan to thank for the orchestration of these college representative appointments.
  • The School Counseling Office also recently hosted the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Exam (ASVAB) in November and several students signed up to take this exam. Please note that should your son/daughter ever wish to take this in the future EG is able to dictate that no contact or sharing of a child's name with the military is allowed as a result of taking the test. Students do have the option to review their results with a military representative if they so wish. This is just another tool for students to see if they lean towards a certain area of interest that might point them in a specific direction for a career, military or otherwise.
  • Several weeks ago during Advisory all freshmen heard options that are available to them at two of our  regional Career and Technical Centers.  Any student wishing to pursue this path should speak to their school counselor.  There is an option for students to visit a center for a day prior to applying so interested students should at least take advantage of this opportunity. Transportation is provided for these visits.  Daily transportation is also provided if the student enrolls in one of the career centers that are located within a certain distance from EGHS.
  • A career awareness activity will start next week for sophomores. This will take place during Advisory and it is anticipated that it will conclude for all sophomores the first week of January.  As part of this activity students will explore, identify and find information about careers with regards to level of education, salary ranges and outlook for job growth both in RI and nationwide.  If you wish to see the website each counselor uses to guide her students through these activities you can view it at:   mynextmove.org.
  • For planning purposes starting in February junior parents will begin receiving invitations to a post high school individual planning meeting with their child’s counselor.   Prior to that invitation we will meet with all juniors as a group to outline the process in general and to discuss some post high school options as well as issue their current transcript for review.
  • In conjunction with the post high school planning with students we host a February parent/student night featuring a college admissions officer that all parent/students are welcome to attend.  That presentation takes place in the auditorium.  Date and time will be advertised in January.
  • Did you know that your son or daughter can earn college credit for free outside of the school day? The State of Rhode Island has created several different pathways for this to happen. The website RICourseChoice.org outlines the options now available for students to attend classes outside of the school day.  If you have specific questions please contact Mrs. Wilson in the guidance department.
  • By mid December the school counselors will wrap up the individual freshmen interviews that started earlier this fall.  Counselors inquire about the transition to the high school, current courses, outside activities, etc  along with asking students to identify an academic and/or personal goal they wish to achieve while in high school. This can be either a long term or short term goal.  This 1:1 informal meeting is a good way to establish a relationship with incoming freshmen each year.
  • Thanks to the Beautify EGHS Committee there is a new  bulletin board in the glass case at the top of the steps leading to the second floor hallway.  This bulletin board is designed to help students identify their counselor by face/name and suggests ways for a student to get in touch with the counselor and reasons why they might want to access them.

Please visit the School Counseling website at:  goo.gl/nUzYnh  or by going to the egsd.net website.
There is a lot of valuable information on the site for parents and students.

As always, we are here to support your child throughout his/her high school years!

About 34,000 Commended Students are being recognized throughout the nation for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2019 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, these Commended Students can take great pride knowing that they placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQTⓇ).

EGHS Named National Blue Ribbon School for 2018

Good afternoon. Today East Greenwich High School was designated as an “Exemplary High Performing Blue Ribbon School for 2018’ by the US Department of Education. We are honored by this recognition which, according to USDOE publication, was last attained by EGHS in 1983-84. The achievement of award is a testament to the years of hard work and excellence that countless students, faculty, staff, parents, and administrators have strived to achieve every day-- both inside and outside of the classroom. It is a wonderful tribute and validation of the efforts we take to achieve our mission to “take risks in order to inspire learning and discover passions.”

It is my honor as principal of East Greenwich High School to thank everyone in our community for their support of our students, our school, and our mission. Without your unwavering support this award would not be possible.

The full press release from the US Department of Education can be found here and the press release from the Rhode Island Department of Education can be found here.

EGHS Announces 10 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

The Principal, Michael J. Podraza, of East Greenwich High School formally announced today the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists and Commended Students.

Semifinalists in the 2019 National MeritⓇ Scholarship Program

Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalist in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit ScholarshipⓇ award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalist are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit ScholarⓇ title.

East Greenwich High School’s Semifinalists are Samantha C. Caterson, Zadoc Gee, Owen T. Petito, Thomas V. Purcell, Riya Sen, Lauren E. Shanos, Jack Silverman, Petranea E. Smith, Ari S. Vilker, David L. Wang. To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalists’ academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SATⓇ scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists about 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation.  All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists.  Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin or religious preference.

“We are very proud of all of this year’s semifinalists” said Principal Michael Podraza. “They are collectively and individually, wonderful exemplars of students who have achieved academic and personal successes through hard work, dedication and a commitment to learning. We wish them the best of luck as they look to advance to the next round of the National Merit competition.”

East Greenwich Technovation Team Makes It to WORLD Semifinals!

From press release for Technovation-

A group of people posing for the camera

Description generated with very high confidenceA team representing East Greenwich High School in the Technovation Rhode Island senior division has been officially named a semifinalist for the Technovation World Pitch!  The team - composed of juniors Katie Cretella and Lauren Shanos and sophomore Morgan Prior - is mentored by Holly Eaves, a mathematics and computer science teacher at EGHS.   Code Trip, as the team is named, is one of only nineteen US teams to make it to the world semifinals.

Code Trip’s app is titled “Easy Eats, provides simple step-by-step recipe instructions that aim to increase the independence of those with intellectual disabilities. The app is cognizant of sensitivities of these individuals, which is why it adheres to specific visual and audio preferences. Additionally, a personalization page allows the user to select their preferred foods. Overall, the app provides users with the ability to cook safely on their own.

Description generated with very high confidenceMrs. Eaves shared that, “The Technovation Challenge is a great opportunity for young women to utilize coding in ways that help their community.  East Greenwich was fortunate to enter two teams, both of which approached this learning opportunity with a positive, productive attitude.   I am very proud of both teams.  We all learned a great deal about app development and entrepreneurial
concepts.”

Technovation offers girls around the world the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to become tech entrepreneurs and leaders. Over 19,000 girls around the world registered to participate in Technovation 2018, building apps and starting businesses that solve problems in their communities. Technovation RI just finished its first season and worked with Technovation MA to host a New England Regional Showcase. This past 2018 season, eight Rhode Island teams participated in Technovation and four teams finished an app and showcased at the New England event.  A second EGHS team, Code Mood, also presented at the New England showcase.  Code Mood, also mentored by Eaves, was composed of senior Lucy Yu and juniors Sarah Brusini and Jillian Valente.

Description generated with very high confidenceTechnovation RI is another great success story involving the state’s CS4RI initiative, one of the most comprehensive statewide computer science (CS) initiatives in the country. Before CS4RI only 1% of RI high school students were enrolled in CS courses. Now all students K-12 have access to CS courses. By 2025, CS4RI aims to double the number of computer science graduates in Rhode Island.
