EGHS Debaters Take Home Several Wins at RIFL Debate Tournament

From Mr. DeCubellis-

EGHS Debaters Take Home Several Wins at RIFL Debate Tournament

Eight members of the EGHS Debate Club's Debate Team competed at Classical High School in a state-wide tournament which included nine private and public schools and over a hundred students this Saturday, November 16th. Mr. Neil McNamara, husband of EG News's Editor-in-Chief Elizabeth McNamara, also generously volunteered his time to help judge.

The students applied their argumentation skills in three rounds of parliamentary-style debate, each lasting between 48 to 60 minutes. After the dust settled, three students were recognized with special recognition and awards:

1. Brianna Knight, 15th Place

2. Oscar Clement, 6th Place

3. Suraj Sait, 4th Place

After a two-year hiatus, the fast-growing team is excited to once again be competing in tournaments sponsored by the Rhode Island Forensics League. The team plans to attend its next tournament on December 7th at Cumberland, RI.

Congrats to all debaters!

  • Currently EGHS is #1 ranked public high school in RI for attendance so far this year per RIDE data. Parents and Guardians are definitely calling in to excuse absences more frequently this year, which we greatly appreciate. However, old habits don’t disappear overnight so there is still room for improvement this year, so please be sure to call your student in for each day they are absent. Our thanks in advance.
  • Be on the lookout for attendance related texts and email alerts from Dr. Heath
  • Feel free to reach out if you have attendance questions or concerns regarding your student’s class/daily attendance
