EGHS Students Named as National Medalists, 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Each year, over 320,000 works are submitted to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The 2017 National Medalists were announced on March 14, 2017 and include students from the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe. 

Congratulations to junior Laura Murphy, who won a National Silver Medal in the 2017 Scholastic Writing Awards for her personal essay entitled, “Silent Voices,” one of two works for which she received a Gold Key Award in the Northeast Region-At-Large that went on to national-level judging. She was the only high school student from Rhode Island to win a National Medal in writing.

Congratulations also to senior Raven Leshin Szewczok, who was awarded a National Silver Medal in the 2017 Scholastic Art Awards for her painting entitled, “Self-Portrait,” which wo
n a Gold Key Award in Rhode Island and was then considered for national-level recognition. She was one of only 8 high school students from Rhode Island to win a National Medal in art.
