Congressman Langevin Presents Award to EGHS Student

Yesterday at EGHS, Congressman Jim Langevin visited East Greenwich High School to award Freshman Julian Wu 2nd place in a Cyber Security Challenge. Julian was presented his award in a surprise visit to his last period Biology class.

Congressmen Langevin, was joined by a representative of Cranston’s McCabe Software and New England Institute of Technology’s Erin Flynn, who coordinates the competition, for the presentation.  McCabe donated a total of $3,000 to support the contest through cash awards and covering participation costs of five schools.  Also involved in the surprise were Julian's parents, EG Superintendent Dr. Victor Mercurio and various members of the media.

Furthering the surprise, the entire class had the opportunity to interact directly with Congressmen Langevin when he participated in a student led Q&A regarding such topics such as national security and the viability of renewable energy in the United States.

More than 100 students, from eight schools, participated in Rhode Island’s third edition of the contest. They competed in timed quizzes to test their aptitude in the three most important foundational skills of effective cyber security: networking, operating systems, and system administration. Last spring Langevin called for more Rhode Island business participation in the competition, noting “you can't have effective workforce development unless the business community is fully engaged.”

Our congratulations go to Julian and his family for this most recent "EGHS Success".  Well done Julian.
