EGHS Debaters Again Bring Home Several Wins at RIFL Debate Tournament

EGHS Debaters Again Bring Home Several Wins at RIFL Debate Tournament

Update by Debate Club President Sunny Sait

Twelve members of the EGHS Debate Club's debate team competed at Cumberland High School in a state-wide tournament this past Saturday. With over forty teams in both the novice and varsity division hailing from private schools, public schools, and even a charter school, a healthy competitive spirit charged the air.

Following three spirited rounds of parliamentary-style debate, five East Greenwich students were recognized with special recognition and awards:

Ella DiTraglia, 20th Place Individual, Novice Division

Clyde Kelly, 19th Place Individual, Novice Division

Suraj Sait, 7th Place Individual, Novice Division

Owen Hirshorn and Ella DiTraglia, 11th Place Team, Novice Division

Oscar Clement and Jack Holmgren, 10th Place Team, Varsity Division.

Helping support this event were three parent-judges who generously volunteered their personal time to our team: Mr. DiTraglia, father of Ella DiTraglia, Mrs. Mary Ward, mother of Kian Bijari, and a Wheeler parent, who helped out in a pinch. By donating their time, these judges enabled all twelve members of the team to compete Saturday.

The team plans to attend its next Rhode Island Forensics League (RIFL) tournament on January 11th at Mount Hope High School. If YOU are an EG parent interested in volunteering to judge on that Saturday, please contact Mr. DeCubellis (gdecubellis@egsd.net) for more information. Each team is required to bring along at least one parent-judge per four student-debaters, so your consideration is much appreciated. It's a long day, but it's a lot of fun!

Congrats to all debaters! And thanks, parents
