Week of 5-8-2017

-IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS-
Chris Herren- Junior and Senior Assembly
Thanks to Mr. Houghtaling and the CWC, EGHS will be able host Chris Herren to present and speak to all Juniors and Seniors this Friday. As we enter the traditionally celebratory seasons of proms, post-proms, awards nights and graduations we want to make sure that our students are reminded to make good decisions, both individually and collectively. It is with this in mind that we welcome Mr. Herren to share his story with our Juniors and Seniors.
Note- due to the presentations logistics and timing we will only be able to have Juniors and Seniors attend this presentation.
Attention Junior-Senior Parents/Guardians: Important Information about AfterProm

State Testing Continues at EGHS
This week is Mathematics testing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Who is tested gets a bit trickier as it is based on Year of Graduation AND current math class enrollment. The criteria is as follows:
  • All members of the Class of 2020 who are enrolled in Algebra 1, Geometry, or Algebra 2 will be tested.
  • Members of the Class of 2019 and 2018 who are enrolled in Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Part II, Geometry, or Algebra 2 AND who have not yet taken a State test in mathematics while at EGHS will be tested. Students should bring their fully charged Chromebook, a calculator and something to read if they finish before the allotted time. Please note- students from the Class of 2018 and 2019 whose parents/guardians opted them out last year in mathematics will not be tested this year as these scores already counted against EGHS and the District in this year’s State and Federal classifications.
Two weeks from today will see all members of the Class of 2018 take the State test for Science on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. No chromebook is required.

Important Details About State Testing
School Classification & Rankings- Please be aware that participation in and the results of State testing are mechanisms by which East Greenwich High School, and the entire district, are classified both federally and locally by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE). Minimally, we must test at least 95% of eligible students in order to be eligible for “commended status”. Students who are not tested for any reason count against us meeting this baseline federal requirement.
Student Participation in Dual & Concurrent Enrollment- According to East Greenwich School Committee policy, students must participate in all State testing in order to be eligible for Dual/Concurrent enrollment. Due to the recent announcement by RIDE that next year the PSAT (10th grade) & SAT (11th grade) will replace PARCC at the high school level, any eligible students not participating in their assigned ELA/Math/Science testing sessions will not be eligible for dual/concurrent enrollment until they have participated in these exams next spring. Please note: participation is required, not a minimum score attainment.
I thank you in advance for encouraging your child to participate and do the best that they can on these assessments. As a public school, State testing is required, however we view it as an opportunity for students to show what they know and are able to do. Additionally, these next few weeks are times for our students to individually and collectively contribute to the outstanding reputation of East Greenwich High School within the State and throughout the nation.
