EGHS SY 14-15 Opening Update

The following was sent to parents/guardians this afternoon.

Dear EGHS Parents and Guardians,

I hope this email finds you enjoying the last few days of summer vacation. Below are a few pieces of information regarding the upcoming school year that you may find of interest and of use.
  • Chromebook Update- as you may or may not know, due to the support of the East Greenwich community, EGHS will become a 1:1 Chromebook school in SY 14-15. What this means is that each and every student while enrolled at EGHS will receive a Chromebook (Acer C720 touchscreen) and a district issued G-mail account (@student.EGSD.net). It is our belief that our 1:1 initiative, which also includes the Google Apps for Education suite (GAFE), will further enhance learning opportunities while empowering students and educators alike.
    • Chromebook Distribution- a formal update and distribution plan will be disseminated next week after confirmation with various vendors has occurred.
    • Student EGSD.NET Email- Students will receive instructions on how to access their district issued email accounts during their class assemblies on Wednesday 8/27.
  • Schedule for 1st Day of School 8/27- We will NOT have a normal Wednesday start time of 8:05 AM. School will begin promptly at 7:33 AM and conclude at 1:58 PM. Students will meet all scheduled classes periods (Advisory, followed by 1-7). For those interested in the specific time schedule, it has been posted on the school's blog "EGHSSuccess"
  • SchedulesUpdated student schedules for both new and returning students will be made available to students in Advisory on 8/27.
  • Open House- Please mark your calendars for the evening of 9/29
  • #EGHSMatters- If you are on Twitter and want to send a message of thanks, share some good news, or promote student's accomplishments, please add the hashtag #eghsmatters to your Tweets. If you want to see the great things our students and educators do in your Twitter feed, please be sure to follow @EGHSMatters
  • Reminder of New Student Orientation- As described in the 2014-15 "Welcome letter" mailed and emailed last week (in case you missed it click here), Freshmen/New student orientation will occur Monday 8/25/2014 at 6pm. Parents and guardians should plan to accompany their child.
    • Video Tour- If you are new to EGHS and cannot attend Monday evening's Open House, or if you can attend and just want a preview or you want to "tour" EGHS prior to the start of school, a video tour has been posted on YouTube-
    • Orientation materials- will be emailed and posted prior to Wednesday's opening
  • Bus Routes- Are available on the District Website (click here)
  • EGHS Text UpdatesPlease see the instructions attached to this email if you would like to sign up to receive important text messages re: EGHS. Only the most important information will be sent (early dismissal, cancellation, etc).
Please accept my best wishes for you and your family to enjoy this last weekend of summer vacation.

Sincerely,

2014-15 School Year Welcome Letter

Below is a copy of the 2014-15 School Year Welcome letter.  Please note date and time of new student orientation.

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to East Greenwich High School for the 2014-15 school year.  As is the case annually, students will be presented with new challenges that will support their individual and collective growth.  When students enter EGHS on the morning of August 27th, I urge them to be prepared to take full advantage of all opportunities for development and learning.  I am fully confident that given the multitude of caring educators, support staff and educational resources that are available, 2014-15 will be a year of unprecedented growth for all.

Enclosed you will find the following important information that needs your attention:
Emergency contact form 2014-15
PTG Information and sign up (3)
Listserv sign up

Students should complete and bring the necessary forms with them on the first day of school as paperwork will be collected by advisory teachers.  Student schedules for SY 14-15 were mailed home earlier this summer*.  All students will have copies of their schedules available in their Advisory on the first day of school.  New students who need a copy of their schedule, should email smong@egsd.net

*IMPORTANT: Changes to schedules will only occur for cases involving: misplaced level, students scheduled in a class they have already taken, missing a course (under-scheduled), or misplaced due to a student not passing the prior academic year.  Schedule changes involving solely elective classes will not be processed until after the 1st week of school.  Attention Seniors: If you are on track for graduation regarding your required credits & would like to enroll in the Senior Project Support Class (non-credit course), you do not need to see a counselor, you can facilitate this change by calling the EGHS Guidance Department at 886-3242.

For all incoming Freshmen and transfer students, there is a very important new student orientation on Monday August 25th.  We will begin the program promptly at 6:00 p.m. and you are asked to bring the previously mailed schedule.  Parents and guardians should accompany their child on this evening as we will be reviewing Rhode Island’s graduation requirements, addressing how EGHS is meeting them, and detailing what is required for all students to become an East Greenwich High School graduate.  Additionally, this evening will allow students to become familiar with the building, their classrooms, and many of the extracurricular opportunities we have available at EGHS.

On behalf of the faculty, staff and administration, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the EGHS community for the 2014-15 school year.  We look forward to working with you this year as we all A.S.P.I.R.E. to achieve our highest potential.

Sincerely,
Michael J. Podraza
Principal
