The National Merit® Scholarship Corporation has announced the Finalists in the 2014 Competition for National Merit® Scholarships.

Andrew F. Miner
Connor M. Ross
Heather C. Shen

On behalf of the entire East Greenwich High School community, I would like to congratulate these students for receiving "Finalist" status. This designation is a testament to the hard work and dedication to learning that they show everyday, both inside and outside of the classroom.

The National Merit® Scholarship Program has determined that these students are three of the 16,000 Semifinalists named in September, 2013 who have advanced to Finalists and will be considered for scholarships later this year.

EGHS Teacher- A Valentine's Day Message to my Students

Originally posted by Mr. Ben Revkin on http://eghstechtips.blogspot.com/2014/02/a-valentines-day-message-to-my-students.html reposted with permission.

A Valentine's Day Message to My Students

To my students - I love you.

To the loud ones: I love the way you inject humor and feeling into a class. I love the way you aren't afraid to say what's on your mind (though I do sometimes rue when and how you say it.)

To the quiet ones: I love the way you can be tacitly self-confident. I love the way you can draw or write or express your infinite wisdom and smile to yourself as you take in the world. I only wish you could share it more with others.

To the unsure ones: I love the way you puzzle out difficult problems. I love the way you don't give up, even when you feel like a ship lost at sea. I only wish you could take strength in your struggle instead of despair; through adversity come solutions.

To the aloof ones: I wish you understood that I love you. You are not an island, and neither am I. We can solve problems together if you and I put in the time together. It is never too late to change the approach, and it will only work if we have the conversation.

To the "smart" and "dumb" ones: I hate those labels, but I love when you overcome them. If you think you know it all, you haven't tried hard enough. If you think you know nothing, you are taking yourself for granted. Each person has a unique talent, and sometimes it can be hard to understand what that is in yourself. Never stop trying because of a label.

To the leaders: I love the way you motivate and inspire others. I love the way you listen to others' problems and try to find solutions. I only wish that every person could realize there is a little bit of leadership in themselves, too.

To the thinkers: I love the way you take longer to answer a question because you are thinking over all the ramifications and possibilities. I love the way the world is not black and white for you, but a myriad shades of gray. I only wish you could spread your patience to others.

To everyone: I love you because you inspire, create laughter, heartbreak, wisdom, perspective, innovation, and more. You make teaching exciting, challenging, demanding, rewarding, and completely awesome. If you are feeling alone today, don't. I love you.

Snow Day...But Learning Will Keep on Rolling!

As the weather is not cooperating with our scheduled "Choose2Matter" plans for today we will be shifting the schedule of events planned for today to tomorrow.

However, we will also continue to learn today.  At 11 AM on Twitter we will have a "Twitter Chat" using the hash-tag #C2M_EGHS . If you are new to Twitter or would like to learn more, here is a very helpful tutorial to get you started- http://www.sophia.org/tutorials/twitter-for-educators (It is geared to educators, but it is a very detailed step by step). The chat's theme is "How Big is Your Brave"- http://switchandshift.com/how-big-is-your-brave

If you would like to participate in the chat, but are not sure how here is a quick start guide- https://docs.google.com/a/egsd.net/file/d/0B5iaJJyGn1_nMlJVNjl5UFpMVTQ/edit and/or here is a very basic video http://youtu.be/m-sVDJBnTGM

Please feel free to participate or just watch the conversation.  We are also working on this great google doc entitled "Thinking Outside the Snow Storm: Innovative Ways We STILL #Choose2Matter #C2M_EGHS" it can be found at https://docs.google.com/a/egsd.net/document/d/1JcMHfadFsRBBxPYhNgdOpxQA1UsBrKNeW-KrxL7PNdM/edit

I hope you and your family are warm and safe. Have a wonderful day.

Thank you for your support of East Greenwich High School.

Social Studies Department Partners With Global Rhode Island and the Brown University Watson Institute

From Mrs. Shaw-

The East Greenwich High School Social Studies department has partnered with Global Rhode Island and the Brown University Watson Institute for International Studies to implement curriculum that features student-driven deliberation on historical and contemporary issues. Global RI works with social studies teachers from around the state and is committed to fostering a community of teachers that engage their students in global issues and at the same time hone their tools of best practice. As part of that mission, Global RI invited fellow EGHS faculty member Ben Revkin to share his wisdom on practical ways to apply technology in a social studies classroom. Mr. Revkin joined our professional development via video conferencing, and his session was a success. Teachers left his session with new tools in hand, and it sparked further sharing throughout the day.

As social studies teachers who participate in the program, it was a point of pride to see interdisciplinary collaboration in action coming from one of our own EGHS leaders. A special thanks to Mr. Revkin for sharing his passion for technology in a user-friendly way and for generously donating his time.
