Mass Comm Class Puts EGHS Technology to Good Use

As a performance assessment component in Mr. DeCubellis' Mass Communication class, the class created websites to demonstrate their learning.

The one of the sites "The Greenwich Gazette" can be found here http://greenwichgazette.weebly.com/

The site contains many interesting articles, opinions and news concerning EGHS and our students.

Congratulations to Mr. DeCubellis and his class on the creation of the sites, which are wonderful examples of how collaboration,  technology & instruction at EGHS are producing outcomes that are real and relevant to our students.

Today at EGHS all students will attend a school wide assembly to listen to guest speaker Chris Herren (Bio/Profile).

Our thanks go out to EGHS Booster Club, EGHS PTG, Citizens Who Care and the Drug Task-force at EGHS who sponsored this week's activities.

Letter From Parents of EGHS Graduate

Below is a wonderful email I had the pleasure of receiving yesterday from two EGHS parents.  I am pleased to pass it along, with permission, to the EGHS community.  Note: the original email has been edited to eliminate personal identifiers.

Hi Mr. Podraza,

We need to share some thoughts with you that our son, shared with us. [Our son] just finished his first semester at the University Of [...]. He had an excellent first semester both academically and socially.  When we asked [him] how finals were going and if he was doing alright; stressed or worried?  He said with confidence, that he felt good. He was ready and well prepared to take his first finals as a college student.  What he said next, is what I hope you share with your faculty.

He said "mom, a lot of my floor mates are really stressed, they have been all semester.  I really think what my HS teachers told me for years is true". He continued by telling me that he was told that EGHS was a special place where students are thoroughly prepared for college life.  The course load; curriculum; study habits and the experience to balance all of that has been enthusiastically taught to our children.  [He] told me when his teachers said 'you students are lucky to be in the East Greenwich School District, you are being well prepared for college', he really didn't believe them, but now those words are ringing back to him and he believes them fully.

Mr Podraza, not only are the skills of teachers, the resources they have and the attitudes they show important, but words that build confidence in their students as well as the students environment are all blessings and very much appreciated.

Thanks!!! to all those who taught our son...  Keep it up!!

-Parents of Current & Graduate EGHS Students

Congressman Langevin Presents Award to EGHS Student

Yesterday at EGHS, Congressman Jim Langevin visited East Greenwich High School to award Freshman Julian Wu 2nd place in a Cyber Security Challenge. Julian was presented his award in a surprise visit to his last period Biology class.

Congressmen Langevin, was joined by a representative of Cranston’s McCabe Software and New England Institute of Technology’s Erin Flynn, who coordinates the competition, for the presentation.  McCabe donated a total of $3,000 to support the contest through cash awards and covering participation costs of five schools.  Also involved in the surprise were Julian's parents, EG Superintendent Dr. Victor Mercurio and various members of the media.

Furthering the surprise, the entire class had the opportunity to interact directly with Congressmen Langevin when he participated in a student led Q&A regarding such topics such as national security and the viability of renewable energy in the United States.

More than 100 students, from eight schools, participated in Rhode Island’s third edition of the contest. They competed in timed quizzes to test their aptitude in the three most important foundational skills of effective cyber security: networking, operating systems, and system administration. Last spring Langevin called for more Rhode Island business participation in the competition, noting “you can't have effective workforce development unless the business community is fully engaged.”

Our congratulations go to Julian and his family for this most recent "EGHS Success".  Well done Julian.

Student Post: Fall Avengers Stand-Outs By Andrew Miner

The Southern Rhode Island Newspapers voted on their All-Area Teams in late December 2012. Among the many EHGS Avengers named to All-Area Teams in football, boys and girls soccer, field hockey, girls tennis, boys and girls cross country, and girls volleyball were several Avenger athletes named as the MVPs of the All-Area Teams for their respective sports. Included in this talented list are Carney Crawford for football, Aleksandra Drljaca for tennis, Margaret McCaffrey for girls cross country, and Keri Pallister for field hockey. Additionally, three Avenger coaches were named Coach of the Year. This year Mr. John George was named for football, Mr. Marc Brocato for girls tennis, and Mr. Pete Dion for boys cross country. Go East!
